What got my motorhome going was in the glovebox

My motorhome gave up on me halfway up a hill, miles from anywhere. What got me going again was sitting in the glovebox. We spend a big chunk of the year on the road in the motorhome. Not caravan-park stuff — proper out there, where the next town's a couple of hours and the one after that is the next day. And you learn quick that out there, you're on your own. If the rig plays up, there's no mechanic around the corner. The nearest one might be half a state away, and getting someone out to a motorhome stuck in the middle of nowhere costs about what you'd expect — if you can even get the signal to call. Then, a fair way into the trip, it happened. Middle of nowhere, and the thing dropped into limp mode halfway up a long hill. Power just gone. Crawling at ten k an hour, engine temps fine, no warning light, no AdBlue warning — nothing on the dash to tell me a thing. And nowhere to take it. No town, no mechanic, no quick answer. Just me, the hill, and a rig that wouldn't pull. Then I remembered the thing I'd chucked in the glovebox before we set off — one of those little plug-in readers, a Clancy. Bought it meaning to have a play with it and never had; it'd sat there untouched since the day it turned up. Got it out, plugged it in right there while it was actually playing up, and had a proper look. It pointed me straight at the AdBlue system. And the second I saw that, I actually breathed out — because AdBlue I can handle. I've topped it up plenty of times. But that's the whole thing. There was nothing on the dash. No light, no warning, nothing. Out there on my own, I'd never in a hundred years have picked that's what it was. I'd have been stuck on that hill half a day waiting on a tow — for something I could fix myself in ten minutes, if only I knew what it was. I limped up the road to a servo with an AdBlue pump, put a couple of litres in, and it came good. Just like that. And that's what that little reader really did for me. It didn't fix the rig — I did that
