Gym ads that bring people through the door

People don't join a gym from an ad. They come in for a class or a trial, meet the people, and decide. Good fitness ads get that first visit and make the place feel like somewhere the reader belongs. Here's what works, hooks to adapt, and how Adwright makes the ads.

Sell the first visit

Make the first step small and specific: a free class, a week's pass, an intro session with a coach. Name the class and the time ("Saturday 9am strength class, free for first-timers") rather than "join today". A first visit is a much smaller ask than a membership.

Show the people, not the perfect bodies

Most people who don't go to a gym are put off by the idea of who goes. Ads that show the real room do better than ads that show models.

  • Your coaches by name, and why they coach.
  • Real members of different ages and levels, with their permission.
  • The room at its normal busy, not empty and not staged.
  • What the first session is actually like, step by step.

Don't talk about the reader's body

Meta's rules don't allow an ad to assert or imply personal attributes such as someone's physical health, so "Are you overweight?" or "Hate how you look?" are out. They also put people off. Talk about the class, the coach, the feeling after a session and what members say instead. Ads for weight loss products and services must also be shown only to people 18 or older.

Timing and distance

Interest rises at the new year, after the summer, and when routines change, such as the school term starting. Have those ads ready. Most people only use a gym that's close to home or work, so target a tight area and say where you are: "Two minutes from [station]".

Example hooks for gyms and fitness studios

Written for this page as examples, not taken from any business’s ads. Swap the [brackets] for your own town, name and numbers, and only claim what’s true.
  • First visit

“Your first class at [studio] is on us. Saturday, 9am.”

  • Belonging

“Beginners welcome. [How many] of our 6am regulars started as beginners too.”

  • Coach

“Meet [name]. She'll show you every move before you try it.”

  • Feeling

“[Forty-five] minutes, then the rest of your day feels easier.”

  • Location

“Two minutes from [station], open before work.”

  • New year

“Not a resolution. Just a class you'll want to come back to.”

  • Proof

“[A real member's words, with their permission]. [First name], member since [year].”

How Adwright makes your ads

  1. 1

Paste your gym's website or class timetable page. Adwright reads your classes, prices, coaches and reviews and builds your brand kit from your logo, colours and voice.

  2. 2

It researches the gyms and studios near you: their offers and, where they advertise, the ads they keep running in Meta's Ad Library, so you see the angles everyone uses and the ones nobody does.

  3. 3

It makes ads for Stories, Reels, TikTok and the feeds, and video ads in several styles, each at the platform's size with the post copy written. Make a new set for January, September or a new class.

You download your ads (pictures as PNG files) with their post copy and run them from your own ad account, such as Meta Ads Manager or TikTok Ads Manager. Your ad budget is between you and the platform: an Adwright plan pays for making the ads.

FAQ

Questions, answered

A free first class or a short trial pass, named and timed: which class, which day. It's a smaller ask than a membership, and once someone has been in, the people do the selling.

Often because they imply something about the reader's body, like "Are you overweight?". Meta doesn't allow ads that assert or imply personal attributes such as physical health. Describe your class and your members' experience instead.

Short clips of real classes, coaches explaining a move and members' first sessions suit TikTok, Reels and Stories well. Adwright makes ads at each of those platforms' sizes from the same project.

Steadily, with more at the moments people look: the new year, after the summer and when routines change. Have those ads ready before the rush, with the class and the first visit named.
